Having an understanding of the bible verses that speak to marriage and love is an important part of living out the ‘Us Marriage’ that God desires for you.

The idea of becoming one with your spouse is a God-inspired one that we can only begin to understand when we understand the type of relationship and love that He portrays in the Bible. The Bible provides many verses and portions of scripture that can guide wives, husbands, newlyweds, or engaged couples.

Amanda and I constantly go back to scripture to inform our relationship with each other as we seek to look more like God’s design for our marriage. In all seasons of relationship whether dating, planning your wedding, or even struggling with marital issues, scripture can inform, encourage, and empower you.

We can NOT stress just how beneficial it is to have a biblical understanding of God’s desire for your marriage! Why? Because God’s design for a “One Flesh” marriage brings life and love into your relationship. So, let’s do a quick survey of what scripture has to say about marriage, love, and everything in between!

Bible Verses About Marriage

The Bible has a TON to say about marriage — but the basic idea is that God designed marriage to be a life-long relationship where one man and one woman become one. Marriage, as designed by God, was created to be a unique type of relationship where you experience life together in ways that are impossible outside of your union!

1. Genesis 1:27-28 — So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

2. Genesis 2:24 — Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

3. Mark 10:9 — Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.

4. Song of Solomon 8:6-7 — Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the LORD. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised.

5. Song of Solomon 2:16 — I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine.

6. Song of Solomon 3:4 — I have found the one whom my soul loves.

7. Matthew 19:6 — So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.

8. Proverbs 17:17 — A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

9. Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 — Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?

10. Esther 4:14 — Perhaps this is the moment for which you have been created.

Bible Verses About Love

Love is a pretty squishy word. What does it actually mean? These Bible verses will help you understand the type of love we are to show to one another! It’s not easy love, it’s faithful and intentional. We’re called to a self-sacrificial love that works towards peace, unity, and lifting the other up.

11. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 — Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

12. 1 Corinthians 13:13 — And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

13. Colossians 3:14 — And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

14. 1 Peter 4:8 — Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

15. 1 John 4: 18-19 — There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.We love because he first loved us.

20. Song of Solomon 8:7 — Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away.

21. John 15:12 — This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

24. Isaiah 62:3-4 — People will not call you Deserted anymore. They will no longer name your land Empty. Instead, you will be called One the Lord Delights In. Your land will be named Married One. That’s because the Lord will take delight in you. And your land will be married. As a young man marries a young woman, so your Builder will marry you. As a groom is happy with his bride, so your God will be full of joy over you.

25. 1 Corinthians 13:2 —“If I have the gift of prophecy and I know all the mysteries and everything else, and if I have such complete faith that I can move mountains but I don’t have love, I’m nothing.”

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

Bible Verses About Husbands And Wives

The Bible calls husbands and wives to operate in specific ways that will bring life into their relationship and help them become one. 42. 1 Peter 3:3-4 — Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.
