The idea of becoming one with your spouse is a God-inspired one that we can only begin to understand when we understand the type of relationship and love that He portrays in the Bible. The Bible provides many verses and portions of scripture that can guide wives, husbands, newlyweds, or engaged couples.
Amanda and I constantly go back to scripture to inform our relationship with each other as we seek to look more like God’s design for our marriage. In all seasons of relationship whether dating, planning your wedding, or even struggling with marital issues, scripture can inform, encourage, and empower you.
We can NOT stress just how beneficial it is to have a biblical understanding of God’s desire for your marriage! Why? Because God’s design for a “One Flesh” marriage brings life and love into your relationship. So, let’s do a quick survey of what scripture has to say about marriage, love, and everything in between!
Bible Verses About Marriage
The Bible has a TON to say about marriage — but the basic idea is that God designed marriage to be a life-long relationship where one man and one woman become one. Marriage, as designed by God, was created to be a unique type of relationship where you experience life together in ways that are impossible outside of your union!
1. Genesis 1:27-28 — So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.
2. Genesis 2:24 — Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
3. Mark 10:9 — Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.
4. Song of Solomon 8:6-7 — Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy is fierce as the grave. 11. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 — Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
12. 1 Corinthians 13:13 — And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
